The Hematology Clinic at Metropolitan Hospital was one of the first departments to be established from the Hospital’s opening in 2001 and is highly regarded in people’s mind for the high quality medical services it provides.
In their everyday practice, the Clinic doctors work on the investigation, diagnosis and treatment of all blood diseases, such as anemia, leukopenia or leukocytosis, platelet disorders, blood coagulation disorders (bleeding diathesis, thrombophilia), and all malignant diseases of the blood (acute and chronic leukemia, myeloproliferative diseases, myelodysplastic syndromes, lymphomas, multiple myeloma).
All procedures that do not require hospitalization (myelogram, biopsy for osteomyelitis, lumbar puncture), as well as all the contemporary treatments (chemotherapy, immunotherapy, administration of blood components) are performed at the Hospital’s One-Day Clinic.
Working together with the Hospital’s other modern and organized departments (Radiology, Nuclear Medicine with modern PET-CT, Clinical Pathology Lab, Molecular Biology Department and Microbiology Lab), it can respond to the investigation of hematology problems in patients and arrive at immediate and precise diagnosis, which is necessary for suitable therapeutic treatment.
All contemporary and innovative treatments (chemotherapy, immunotherapy, autologous peripheral blood/bone marrow stem cell transplantation) are applied on an inpatient basis in modern facilities.
The Clinic has a Cytoapheresis Department (platelet apheresis, leukapheresis, plasmapheresis, collection of peripheral blood stem cells) and a Cryofreeze Lab for processing and storing peripheral blood/bone marrow stem cells, so it can offer complete therapeutic support, in partnership with the Blood Bank, to all patients with blood disorders and patients with immunological (vasculitis), neurological (myasthenia gravis, acute Guillain-Barré syndrome, corticosteroid-resistant rapidly evolving multiple sclerosis) or other diseases (hyperviscosity syndrome, cryoglobulinemia, protein binding toxicity, pemphigus foliaceus, hypercholesterolemia, acute sudden-onset liver failure).
While treating and monitoring the patients, the Clinic doctors and nursing staff ensure and maintain the patients’ physical and psychological support and the best possible quality of life, which is necessary for an excellent outcome.
The Clinic is staffed by the necessary medical and nursing staff in order to operate and offer its services 24/7. In collaboration with foreign and national universities, the Clinic physicians participate in international conferences and international treatment protocols, using this experience to provide the best treatment to patients.
