Da Vinci SP: Η νέα εποχή στη ρομποτική χειρουργική

Metropolitan Hospital becomes the first hospital in Greece and one of only a few centers worldwide to acquire the unique Vinci Single Port (SP) system, representing the most recent and most advanced generation of robotic surgery.

Single-port robotic surgery

Conventional laparoscopic or robotic surgery requires multiple abdominal incisions through which surgical instruments are introduced. With the Vinci SP, the procedure is performed through single incision, through which three fully articulated instrument arms and a high-definition 3D camera are inserted. All movements are controlled entirely by the surgeon, delivering exceptional precision, stability, and a true three-dimensional view of the operative field.

This technology offers all the established advantages of robotic surgery while further minimizing surgical trauma. The result is postoperative pain, ,and faster return to daily activities.

What are the benefits for the patient?

Single-port robotic surgery is not just a technological advancement. It is primarily defined by the benefits it offers to patients:

  • Independent motion and superior precision: Maintains the flexibility and independent articulation of multi-port robotic systems (EndoWrist technology), significantly surpassing conventional laparoscopy.
  • Minimally invasive with reduced bleeding: The single external incision substantially reduces internal tissue trauma and postoperative pain.
  • Patient-friendly surgical approach: Procedures are performed extraperitoneally and with the patient in a neutral position, reducing the risk of respiratory complications, postoperative infections, and injuries related to extreme positioning.
  • Ideal for patients with significant comorbidities: Enables safe surgical management of patients with respiratory or cardiovascular disease, as well as those with prior abdominal surgeries.
  • Reduced anesthetic burden: Minimal surgical trauma combined with neutral patient positioning significantly decreases anesthetic stress, allowing safe surgery even in patients with severe obesity.
  • Shorter operative times: Direct access to the target organ reduces operative duration and, in many cases, facilitates faster recovery.

This technology is particularly valuable for high-risk patients who, until now, may not have been suitable candidates for conventional surgical approaches.

The introduction of the da Vinci SP is under the scientific leadership of Dr. Vasileios Poulakis, Director of Urology and Robotic Urology at Metropolitan Hospital and Associate Professor at the University of Frankfurt, Germany. With more than 11,000 robotic procedures performed, Dr. Poulakis is among the most experienced robotic surgeons worldwide. His extensive experience with all generations of the da Vinci system ensures the highest standards of safety, precision, and clinical effectiveness in the adoption of this new technology.

This initiative reaffirms our vision for continuous investment in innovation, scientific excellence, and a patient-centered approach to healthcare.
