The Hematology Clinic of Metropolitan Hospital was one of the first departments established when the hospital started operating in 2001, and it has since earned a strong reputation for providing high-level medical care.
In daily practice, the Clinic’s physicians focus on the investigation, diagnosis, and treatment of the full range of blood disorders, including anemia, leukopenia or leukocytosis, platelet disorders, blood clotting abnormalities (bleeding tendencies, thrombophilia), and malignant blood diseases (acute and chronic leukemias, myeloproliferative disorders, myelodysplastic syndromes, lymphomas, and multiple myeloma).
At the hospital’s Day Clinic, all necessary procedures for patients who do not require hospitalization are performed, such as bone marrow aspiration, bone marrow biopsy, and lumbar puncture. In addition, all modern therapies are provided, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and blood component transfusions.
In collaboration with the Hospital’s other highly organized and advanced departments (Radiology, Nuclear Medicine with PET-CT, Histopathology Lab, Molecular Biology, and Microbiology), the Hematology Clinic can thoroughly investigate every hematological problem, ensuring immediate and accurate diagnosis which is critical for selecting the most effective treatment.
The Clinic offers all the contemporary and pioneering therapies, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and autologous stem cell transplantation from peripheral blood or bone marrow, supported by advanced hospital facilities.
The Clinic also includes Apheresis Department (plateletpheresis, leukapheresis, plasmapheresis, stem cell collection from peripheral blood) and Cryopreservation Laboratory for processing and storing peripheral blood and bone marrow stem cells. Thus, together with the Blood Bank Department, the Clinic is able to provide full therapeutic support not only to patients with hematological diseases but also to those with immunological (vasculitis), neurological (Myasthenia Gravis, acute Guillain-Barré syndrome, rapidly progressive multiple sclerosis resistant to corticosteroids) or other disorders (hyperviscosity syndrome, cryoglobulinemia, protein-binding toxic substance poisoning, pemphigus vulgaris, hypercholesterolemia, fulminant hepatic failure).
Beyond treatment and medical monitoring, the Clinic’s physicians and nursing staff provide both physical and psychological support, helping patients maintain the best possible quality of life, a factor essential for achieving the best treatment outcomes.
The Clinic is staffed with the necessary medical and paramedical personnel to provide continuous, round-the-clock coverage. Its physicians collaborate with universities both in Greece and abroad, participate in international conferences and treatment protocols, and have the expertise to manage all cases to the highest standard.
