Imaging-assisted MRI-guided brachytherapy

First time and exclusively in Greece: Gynecological Tumor Brachytherapy under 3D MRI-Guided Imaging with local control rates of 85% for advanced tumors and 95% for early-stage tumors.

The scientists of the Radiation Oncology Center at Metropolitan Hospital are specialized in the techniques of image-guided interstitial brachytherapy.

Specifically in gynecologic cancer, they hold international recognition with a large number of publications (8,200 citations on ResearchGate) in distinguished scientific journals. At our hospital, we use, among others, specialized applicators for interstitial brachytherapy, made from MRI-compatible materials.

In interstitial brachytherapy, thin catheters are implanted in the tumor area. The radiation is delivered in a highly targeted and precise manner from inside, sparing healthy tissues, while ensuring full coverage of the tumor regardless of its shape and size.

With the systematic use of four-dimensional (4D) MRI-guided brachytherapy, local control rates range between 85–100%, depending on the extent of the disease. The rate of severe side effects does not exceed 5% overall.

Brachytherapy for Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation (APBI)

In women with low-risk breast cancer, the technique of partial breast irradiation has been increasingly adopted in recent years.

The benefits for the patient are multiple, as radiotherapy is completed within 5 days, instead of the 6 weeks required by conventional therapy, and with fewer acute and late side effects.
