Bonatsos Gerasimos

Prof. Gerasimos Bonatsos is a distinguished and highly respected figure in the field of General Surgery, with an illustrious academic and professional career. 

He received his Medical Degree (M.D.) from the School of Medicine at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in 1977, followed by a Doctoral Diploma (Ph.D.) in 1983. He furthered his studies in Organ Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Surgery at the Department of Surgery at the University of Cambridge, and subsequently trained in Laparoendoscopic Surgery at the University of New York and Yale University.

Prof. Bonatsos’ academic career at the University of Athens has been marked by steady progression, from Research Assistant in 1981 to Emeritus Professor of Surgery in 2021. Throughout this period, he held numerous prestigious positions, including Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Director of the Surgical Nursing Section at the Faculty of Nursing. 

He is an active member of several esteemed medical societies, such as the American College of Surgeons, the International Society of Surgery, and the European Association of Endoscopic Surgery. Prof. Bonatsos has also made significant contributions to research. His diverse research interests include minimally invasive therapies, laparoendoscopic surgery, experimental transplantation of pancreatic islets for diabetes treatment, carcinogenesis in digestive system tumors, surgical infections, and advancing modern surgical education. His research has been extensively published in leading medical journals, greatly advancing the field of surgery.

In addition to his academic achievements, Prof. Bonatsos has held key administrative and leadership roles within the medical community. He served as the President of the Hellenic Society of Endoscopic Surgery and Chairman of the Scientific Committee at Eugenideion Hospital. Since 2022, he has been the Chairman of the Mortality and Morbidity Committee at Metropolitan Hospital.

Prof. Bonatsos has contributed to scholarly literature, particularly in laparoscopic surgery and surgical pathologies. His organizational contributions include directing postgraduate studies and holding key positions at both the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Nursing at the University of Athens. Through his leadership in surgery, education, and hospital administration, Prof. Bonatsos has solidified his reputation as a prominent figure in both Greek and international medical circles.
