Dervenis Christos

Profile

Born in Volos, Greece, on April 29, 1954.

He graduated from the University of Athens in 1978 and obtained his specialty title in Surgery in 1985.

He continued his postgraduate training in London and Bern, Switzerland, specializing in Pancreatic, Liver, and Biliary Surgery. He was awarded a PhD by the University of Athens in 1997.

He served as Head of Surgery at Konstantopouleio General Hospital of Nea Ionia “Agia Olga” for 18 years and as Professor of Surgery at the University of Cyprus (2017–2021). He is also a Visiting Professor at the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA).

Currently, he is Director of the Department of Surgical Oncology and Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery at Metropolitan Hospital in Athens and Medical Director of the same hospital.

He has been invited as Visiting Professor at several universities in Europe and the USA, including Mayo Clinic Medical School (Rochester, MN), Yale University (CT, USA), and Harvard Medical School (invited lecturer). In Europe, at the University of Lund (Sweden), University of Verona (Italy), and University of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg, South Africa).

He has been invited as a speaker at more than 200 international congresses and over 250 national (Greek) meetings.

He served as President of the European Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association and as a member of the governing board of the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, President of the European Digestive Surgery Society, and Vice-President of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS – Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Division). He also served as President of the Hellenic Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, the Hellenic Digestive Surgery Society, and the Pancreatology Section of the Hellenic Gastroenterology Society.

He has been elected Honorary Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the Argentine Academy of Surgery, the Italian Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, and the Turkish Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association.

In June 2023, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Medical School of the University of Thessaly.

He has authored three books with international publishers and published 250 articles with more than 63,000 citations and an h-index of 83.

For the fifth consecutive year, he has been included in the list of the top 2% of scientists worldwide, according to the Stanford University ranking (USA).
