In 1978 he participated in written exams and was admitted to the Varvakeios Model School; he graduated top of his class in June 1984, with a general grade of 20/20.
In 1984 he participated in the national university-entry exams and was admitted to the Athens University Medical School (rank 55). He completed his medical studies in September 1990 summa cum laude, with a grade average of 9.46 (out of a total of 59 lessons), ranked 1st among students of the same year.

Doctoral Thesis
05/1997: PhD, Faculty of Medicine, University of Athens His doctoral thesis entitled "Medical concepts in the work of Plato," received a unanimous summa cum laude grade.
In August 2002 he applied for the position of Lecturer of History of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Crete.
From April to October 2000, he attended postgraduate training in Laparoscopic Surgery in a special center at the Leeds General Infirmary, UK. His training was funded by a scholarship from the Hellenic Society of Endoscopic Surgery.
From 1995 to 2002, he attended the annual Surgery workshops organized by the Hellenic Surgical Society.
During the past 15 years, he has attended several postgraduate courses and seminars (Laparoscopic Surgery, Angiology - Vascular Surgery, postgraduate ATLS trauma response program training etc.) in Greece and abroad.
State Scholarships Foundation (IKY) performance scholarships throughout his medical studies (from admission to graduation).
University scholarship, Antonios Papadakis legacy (granted after exams, 1st among 283 candidates).
In October 1991, during a special ceremony before the Rector of Athens University, he was awarded a scholarship amounting to GRD 4 million, as top of his class from the Athens University Medical School for the academic year 1989-1990.
In 2000 he received a scholarship from the Hellenic Society of Endoscopic Surgery, for overseas postgraduate training in Laparoscopic Surgery.
From 1998 until 2002, he received 7 awards during special ceremonies, as part of the postgraduate courses organized by the Hellenic Surgical Society.
In May 1996, he was awarded the 1st prize for best oral paper by a new scientist, during the 22nd Hellenic Medical Congress.
He has attended more than 80 national and international medical congresses and has presented 50 papers. He has published 27 papers, 11 of them in international journals.
