The Oncology Department at Metropolitan Hospital consists of three Oncology Clinics staffed by highly experienced oncologists who play an active role in both the Greek and international oncology community. Oncology Clinic A’, Oncology Clinic B’ and Oncology Clinic D’, among others, combine extensive clinical expertise with ongoing research and academic activity. Physicians in these clinics have designed and participated in both international and national clinical trials, while also contributing significantly to the education of young scientists.
The oncology clinics are further supported by internal medicine specialists, highly trained oncology nurses, psychologists, dietitians, and skilled administrative staff. There is close collaboration with the Radiation Oncology Clinic, Radiology, Interventional Radiology, the Department of Histopathology, the Molecular Biology Laboratory, and the Breast Center, all of which are essential partners of the Oncology Department.
A key activity of the department is the weekly Oncology Board meeting, where complex cases are discussed with input from all involved specialties.
Medication preparation is carried out centrally under the supervision of clinical pharmacists, who also actively participate in daily patient discussions and ward rounds.
Most cases are treated in the Day Clinic. Here, most chemotherapy sessions are performed, along with procedures such as paracenteses, transfusions, and hydration therapies. Modern oncology care ensures that cancer patients are only admitted to inpatient wards when strictly necessary.
Through clinical trials, the Oncology Department offers patients access to innovative cancer therapies, including new drugs that may be beneficial well before they are commercially available. Physicians are actively involved in research, providing patients with the opportunity to benefit from cutting-edge treatments.
Highly trained scientific team
The department’s specialized and highly trained medical and nursing staff, together with psychologists and other healthcare professionals, provide comprehensive therapeutic care and continuous support throughout treatment. At the same time, the department maintains a strong academic role by organizing conferences and seminars on oncological diseases and their management.
Advanced Technology
Equipped with state-of-the-art machinery and laboratory methods, the department delivers precise diagnostic testing, advanced treatment, and a safe, comfortable environment for patients.
Treatment Approaches
All malignant tumors are managed using the most up-to-date approaches, including chemotherapy, hormone therapy, immunotherapy, and targeted biological therapies. When needed, specialized molecular and genetic tests are conducted in collaboration with the Molecular Biology and Genetics Laboratory at Metropolitan Hospital.
Chemotherapy is administered in specially designed day-care or short-stay units. Medication preparation and compounding are performed under fully sterile conditions
Within the framework of the Oncology Department, specialized services also operate, including the Oncology Board, an Oncology Counseling Clinic, and a Pigmented Lesions and Melanoma Clinic.
